A 42-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries when he crashed head on into another vehicle in San Diego’s San Pasqual Valley area, police said Thursday.

The crash happened around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 1900 block of San Pasqual Valley Road near Escondido, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.

The man was driving northbound on San Pasqual Valley Road when he crossed over the center line for unknown reasons and collided head on with a vehicle being driven by a 39-year-old man southbound on San Pasqual Valley Road, Buttle said.

The 42-year-old man, whose name was not immediately available, was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. He suffered blunt force trauma and underwent surgery for a torn aorta, Buttle said.

The 39-year-old man, whose name was not released, suffered abrasions.

No vehicle descriptions were immediately available.

Alcohol or drugs were not believed to be factors in the collision, Buttle said.

Traffic division officers were investigating the collision.
