The California Highway Patrol on Wednesday reported that two people were killed on the streets and highways in its jurisdiction during the first 12 hours of this year’s Independence Day holiday.
The reporting period began at 6:01 p.m. Tuesday and ended Wednesday at 6 a.m., the CHP said. During that same time period last year, no fatalities were reported.
Statewide, during the same reporting period this year, the CHP reported six fatalities, compared to 10 last year.
Statewide, there were 198 DUI arrests, down from last year’s count of 263.
