A man who assaulted his ex-girlfriend in her Carlsbad home — the aftermath witnessed by her 11-year-old daughter — was sentenced Monday to 14 years and four months in state prison.
Michael Jonathan Carabajal, 34, was convicted last month of assault and battery, burglary, making a criminal threat, assault likely to cause great bodily injury, corporal injury to a significant other, false imprisonment and child abuse. He was acquitted of attempted murder and rape.
Carabajal was arrested at the victim’s home in south Carlsbad on Calle Mejor the afternoon of March 17, 2016.
Officers were called to the residence shortly before 3 p.m. by the victim’s 11-year-old daughter.
The girl had called home when her mother failed to pick her up after school and was told by her mother to call police and not to come home, Carlsbad police said.
Police said the girl arrived home about 10 minutes later to find her mother on the bed with her leg dislocated at the hip and the defendant standing over her.
