Three men and two women were recovering Thursday from injuries they suffered in a late-night pileup at an East County intersection near the Granite Hills community.
The three-vehicle wreck occurred about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, when an eastbound 2007 Chevrolet Silverado plowed into the back of a 1994 Volvo 940 that was stopped for a red light at Greenfield Drive and East Main Street in El Cajon, just west of Interstate 8, according to police.
The impact caused the pickup truck to overturn, ejecting the man behind the wheel, and pushed the older-model sedan across the roadway into a 2017 Nissan Murano SUV whose driver was waiting in a left-turn lane on the other side of the intersection, Lt. Stephen Kirk said.
The 30-year-old driver of the Silverado suffered the most serious injuries in the crash, including head and facial trauma, the lieutenant said. One of the two female passengers in the Volvo suffered a broken leg, while the second woman and the other two motorists, both men, were less severely hurt.
Investigators believe intoxication may have been a factor in the accident, which left the road crossing closed to through traffic until about 4:30 Thursday morning, Kirk said.
