A crash that left a driver dead in back country is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
The wreckage was spotted Sunday afternoon along Interstate 8 in Boulevard, just east of McCain Valley Road, by a driver in a lifted vehicle.
First responders arrived on scene and discovered a dead male, believed to be the crash driver, according to CHP Sgt. Ryan Swafford.
Investigators believe the victim was headed eastbound at an unknown speed and made an “abrupt, hard left” before crashing about 30 feet down into a gully between highway lanes, Swafford said.
The victim was not wearing a seat belt, Swafford said.
Investigators are unsure what time the crash occurred and no other injuries were reported.
The victim’s identity was not released pending notification of next of kin.
