Officers will be stopping vehicles to check drivers for signs of alcohol or marijuana impairment somewhere in the city limits from 11 p.m. Wednesday until 3 a.m. Thursday. The location will be chosen based on previous accidents and arrests.

Police report a growing number of drug-related traffic accidents, due to both marijuana and prescription drugs, and remind drivers that “DUI doesn’t just mean booze.”

Over the past three years San Diego officers have investigated 2,381 DUI collisions which have claimed 19 lives and resulted in another 2,257 injuries.

The checkpoints are regularly announced in advance because of the deterrent effect on people who might drink or take drugs and drive.
