A deputy pursuing a wanted man through the East County got tangled up in a chain-reaction series of car crashes Thursday near Lindo Lake County Park, at which point the suspect took advantage of the roadway chaos he’d caused to make his escape.

The pursuit began about 8:45 a.m., when sheriff’s personnel searching for parolee-at-large Brandon Worley spotted him driving on North Second Street in El Cajon and tried to pull him over, Sgt. Cliff Rinder said.

Worley, 26, allegedly refused to yield, instead speeding off to the north and west over various streets at speeds reaching 80 mph.

At Winter Gardens Boulevard and Woodside Avenue in nearby Lakeside, the car the suspect was driving hit another vehicle, Rinder said. Worley then backed up, getting into a collision with a deputy’s cruiser, which in turn crashed into the vehicle that had just been struck by Worley’s sedan, the sergeant said.

The pileup caused no reported injuries.

Following the collisions, the suspect sped off, and sheriff’s officials called off the pursuit for safety reasons.

Worley remained at large Thursday afternoon, the sergeant said.
