Public safety personnel searched in vain Monday for a 27-year-old musician who fell off Crystal Pier over the weekend and disappeared into the ocean.
The man, identified by friends as Pacific Beach singer-songwriter Taylor Watts, plunged into the surf from the landmark structure at the foot of Garnet Avenue about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
Witnesses said Watts appeared to have hit his head on part of the pier on the way down, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said.
A lifeguard immediately jumped into the ocean and was soon joined in the search for Watts by colleagues in a patrol boat and a smaller watercraft. A city rescue helicopter crew soon was joined by personnel aboard a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and the USCG cutter Haddock.
About two hours after sunset, lifeguards temporarily called off their search, but the federal maritime agency’s crews continued to scan the waters through the night.
The multi-agency operations resumed Monday morning and continued through the afternoon, Munoz said. As evening approached the personnel again suspended the search without having located the missing man or his body.
It was unclear if full-scale search efforts would resume Tuesday morning.
