A man who held up a number of fast-food restaurants, gas stations and other stores at gunpoint throughout San Diego County last summer pleaded guilty Wednesday to nine counts of robbery and one count each of identity theft and shoplifting.
Michael Garcia, also known as Michael Vincent, also admitted a “strike” and serious felony prior for murder from New Mexico in 1999.
Garcia faces up to 36 1/2 years in prison when he is sentenced March 2.
Deputy District Attorney James Koerber said Garcia, 36, used a stolen ID to purchase two BB guns from a Walmart in Santee, then went on a robbery spree from July 9 to Sept. 15.
Garcia was dubbed the “Red Wig Bandit” because he wore a wig in some of the robberies, the prosecutor said.
Authorities said Garcia robbed Flyers Gas on Otay Mesa Road on July 9, USA Gas in El Cajon on Aug. 12, GameStop on Navajo Road in San Diego on Aug. 15, Poncho’s in El Cajon on Aug. 21, Subway in Santee on Sept. 2, GameStop in El Cajon on Sept. 4, Smart & Final in Chula Vista on Sept. 5, and Little Caesars on Waring Road in San Diego on Sept. 15.
