The Chula Vista Fire Department was investigating an apartment fire Sunday that was allegedly triggered by juveniles with illegal smoke bombs.

The blaze was reported around 2 p.m. in the 400 block of F Street along the exterior of a three-story apartment complex, according to senior fire investigator Derek Olivas.

One of the juveniles got spooked and threw one of the devices onto a nearby trellis, igniting the structure and nearby brush, Olivas said.

Investigators were working to determine how the children obtained the illegal smoke bombs. Olivas said the juveniles were cooperating, and were “scared” and “remorseful.”

“Hopefully it was a lesson learned today,” he said.

Fortunately, the incident was less than a block away from a fire station, otherwise the situation could have been much worse, Olivas added.

There was no immediate word whether the juveniles were taken into custody.
