A former model whose chiselel, tattooed physique has been featured on romance novel covers pleaded guilty Tuesday in a Connecticut federal court to a charge of bank robbery, according to various news reports.
David Byers, of Solana Beach, 35, entered his plea in Hartford following his San Diego arrest in May, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The former cover boy was suspected in a serious of armed robberies over a 48-hour period in New York and Connecticut, according to the Times report.
Among his targets were gas stations, and two different Chase Bank locations, one of which he robbed twice, the report continued.
Byers crimes kept him running from police for nearly two weeks, crossing state lines along the way. After eluding Pennsylvania officials, the model-turned-criminal was spotted in Arizona on May 1 but escaped arrest.
Finally, on May 2, Byers was tracked by San Diego SWAT officers after he pulled into the parking lot of a liquor store at Upas and 30th streets, according to various reports. Police discharged a flash-bang grenade to distract the thief and took him into custody, KNSD-TV in San Diego reported.
He is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 30 and faces up to 20 years in federal prison.
L.A.-based photographer Michael Stokes told The Times that Byers has been featured on several romance novel covers. The photographer used an image of Byers for his 2015 book “Exhibition,” which showcases photos of various male fitness models from around the world.
Stokes told the Times that Byers was known in modeling circles for his “edgy, hard, bad-boy” look.
