Two men were killed and two men were wounded Saturday, including an armed man who surrendered to National City police after an eight-hour standoff, authorities said.

“We’re still trying to figure it all out,” National City Police Officer Thomas Wilkins after the wounded man believed to be the suspect surrendered to police about 5:45 p.m. in the 1000 block of East Eighth Street. “We’re not sure as to what happened.”

The shooting was reported at 9:30 a.m., Wilkins said.

Officers found two men dead at the scene and one wounded, he said. A wounded man believed armed was barricaded inside an apartment.

Police urged residents around the shooting scene to evacuate.

“Please be aware of active homicide investigation with barricaded person in the 900-1200 block of East Eighth Street,” according to a tweet by the NCPD. “Instructions: Please evacuate if possible.”

East Eighth Street and some surrounding streets were blocked off and a SWAT team surrounded the duplex, Wilkins said. The evacuations were ended after the barricaded man surrendered.
