Warning that Cinco de Mayo has become a deadly holiday due to drunk and drugged driving, San Diego Police are planning saturation patrols throughout the weekend.

The patrols will take place from 7 p.m. Friday until 3 a.m. Saturday, from 4 p.m. Saturday until midnight Sunday, and finally from 7 p.m. Sunday until 3 a.m. Monday.

The department said patrols will take place in areas with high frequencies of DUI collisions and arrests.

DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols are typically announced in advance because of the deterrent effect on drivers.

Over the past three years, San Diego officers have investigated 2,005 DUI collisions that have claimed 42 lives and resulted in hundreds of injuries.
