Rosarito, a popular destination for San Diego college students to celebrate spring break, became a nightmare Thursday night for three U.S. citizens who had been partying at a local nightclub in the Mexican resort town.
An Uber driver was fatally shot as he drove the three Americans from Papas & Beer to a residence at Club Marena, KPBS reported. The shooting took place around 11:35 p.m. on southbound Federal Highway 1, according to the KPBS report.
The Uber driver was identified by Rosarito police as Jose Humberto Feliz Mendez, 28, a student at the Autonomous University of Baja California, the KPBS report continued. He was shot several times.
The American passengers tried to save the man, but he died before police arrived on the scene, according to KPBS.
“The attack was directly against the chauffeur, not against any of the passengers,” a spokesman for the Rosarito Police Department told KPBS. “None of the passengers were injured.”
Uber drivers have repeatedly been injured in confrontations with taxi drivers who are unhappy about the competition, but it’s unknown whether Thursday’s slaying was related to the fued, KPBS reported.
