A 911 caller reported seeing a pedestrian wandering around with a machete in his hands in the area of West Harbor Drive and Front Street around 3 a.m., harbor police Sgt. Chris Woodward said.

The suspect, later identified as 42-year-old Andrew Mark Alexander, allegedly refused officers’ orders to put down the weapon, prompting one of them to shoot him with the non-lethal gun. Alexander then dropped the machete and was taken into custody, the sergeant said.

Alexander underwent a mental health evaluation before being booked into San Diego Central Jail on misdemeanor charges of exhibiting a deadly weapon and obstructing a peace officer.

He was being held on $10,000 bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Thursday morning.
