A pedestrian was killed Wednesday afternoon by an Amtrak train in Encinitas, authorities are reporting.
The collision occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. when a male pedestrian “stepped on the railroad tracks in front of the train” at the intersection of Leucadia Boulevard and Vulcan Avenue, according to San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Deputy T. Pugh.
The southbound Amtrak train was traveling at about 90 mph and went into emergency braking but could not stop in time to avoid the pedestrian, Pugh said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His age and identity have not been released.
