A Carson resident who stole a Los Angeles County man’s identity and ran up at least $40,000 in debt pleaded guilty in Vista Wednesday to identity theft and burglary charges.
William Dexter Redwine, 50, checked into the Holiday Inn at 1401 Carmelo Drive in Oceanside last Sept. 20, but switched rooms because of a maintenance problem. The next day, hotel workers alerted police after they found fake IDs inadvertently left behind in the room he vacated, Oceanside police Officer Kathleen Vincent said.
Redwine and a woman companion were leaving as officers arrived, but were detained upon their return. A subsequent search of their room turned up evidence of drug use and of an ongoing counterfeit operation, Vincent said.
Redwine and the woman were arrested and booked into the Vista Detention Facility, but she was not charged.
Officers tracked down an identity theft victim, a Los Angeles man, who told them he and his company had lost more than $40,000.
Redwine will be sentenced to five years and eight months in custody on March 16.
