A Border Patrol agent was assaulted in the Dulzura area while attempting to apprehend an undocumented migrant with prior convictions for illegally crossing into the country and having sexual contact with a child, authorities said Friday.
The attack happened Wednesday morning as agents were searching for five people suspected of illegally entering the U.S. in a remote area on Otay Mountain. One of the suspects pulled an agent into a gully in which he was apparently attempting to hide and hit the agent with his elbow, according to a Border Patrol statement.
The agent was able to arrest that suspect, but was taken to a hospital afterward to be treated for undisclosed injuries. It was later determined that suspect had prior immigration and felony convictions, including for sexual contact with a child, the statement said.
Three of the other undocumented immigrants were taken into custody, but one was able to escape and was still at large, authorities said.
Three of the four Mexican citizens were treated at a hospital for heat- related illness after being arrested and have since been released to agents.
The fourth remained hospitalized with a knee injury and dehydration, according to the statement.
