Five people were in critical condition after a head-on collision between two vehicles in Rancho Santa Fe on Saturday evening, according to firefighters.

Rancho Santa Fe Fire arrived on scene after reports of the traffic collision which happened at about 11:30 p.m. The crash took place at the intersection of Paseo Delicias and Del Dios Highway.

The most seriously injured patients had to be cut out of their vehicles, which turned into death traps from the damage caused by the collision. Firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools known as “Jaws of Life” to rescue the crash victims.

As crews worked to clear the scene both directions of the Del Dios Highway were closed to the public. No further information was available on the condition of the patients.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.
