East County residents near Potrero are not in any danger from a fire burning in Mexico, according to Cal Fire officials.
Smoke can be seen on the U.S. side in the border community, but the 124-acre fire was burning in a southeasterly direction toward the interior of Mexico, according to Capt. Isaac Sanchez of Cal Fire.
The fire broke out Saturday shortly before 2 p.m. south of Bell Valley and burned right up to the U.S./Mexico border, Sanchez said. But the fire turned back south in the evening.
Nine firefighters and three fire engines remained on the scene late Sunday morning as a precaution, according to Sanchez.
