Chula Vista Police conducted a “distracted driver” operation Wednesday that cited 99 drivers for unsafe and illegal cell phone usage.
The operation was conducted throughout Chula Vista from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., according to a police statement.
During the operation, 54 drivers were cited for using cell phones while driving and 45 others for texting. There were seven drivers who were cited for using a suspended license or not having a valid license, and their vehicles were impounded. Six other citations were written for various vehicle code violations, according to police.
Chula Vista police have two more distracted driver operations scheduled for later this month. Funding for the operations was provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
