A passer-by left a metal canister resembling a military ammunition case next to a California Highway Patrol cruiser parked outside a DMV office Thursday, prompting its evacuation until a bomb squad determined the box contained nothing hazardous.
The unidentified man, who was walking a dog, put the olive-drab case onto the ground outside the Department of Motor Vehicles building on Plaza Drive in Oceanside about 11 a.m. and then continued on his way, according to the CHP.
Authorities cleared everyone out of the DMV office, escorted them a safe distance away and called in a sheriff’s ordnance-handling team. The personnel inspected the canister, opened it and found that it contained ordinary computer hard drives.
Officials gave an all-clear in the early afternoon, the Highway Patrol reported.
