A fire likely sparked by an electric coffee maker damaged a Sunset Cliffs-area home Monday and left a woman and her daughter in need of interim lodging.
The non-injury blaze erupted in an upstairs kitchen in the two-unit residence in the 1200 block of Trieste Drive shortly before 7:30 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
It took firefighters about 15 minutes to get the flames fully under control.
The displaced residents were able to secure temporary housing on their own, but the American Red Cross was called in to help them handle other fire-related tasks, such as insurance claims, said fire spokesman Lee Swanson.
The blaze caused an estimated $50,000 in structural damage to the upstairs unit and destroyed about $25,000 in contents. The ground-level residence was unscathed, according to Swanson.
Investigators concluded that the flames had begun spreading “in or around” a coffee-brewing appliance, the spokesman said.
