Thieves made an unsuccessful attempt to break into an ATM inside a Santee drug store early Monday, but were successful in getting cash from another machine in Rancho Santa Fe minutes later, the sheriff’s department reported.

In the first case, deputies from the Santee Station responded within one minute to a 1:13 a.m. commercial burglary alarm at the Walgreens store at 10512 Mission Gorge Road. However, the suspects had already fled, according to the sheriff’s department.

The front door to the store had been pried open, as was the front of a Navy Federal ATM machine located inside. The suspects failed to access the safe within the ATM, so there was no cash loss.

At 1:36 a.m., deputies from the Rancho San Diego Station responded to a commercial burglary alarm at a Rite Aid store at 2516 Jamacha Road. The front door had been pried open and the ATM inside was pried open and an unknown amount of cash removed, sheriff’s officials said.
