California Highway Patrol officers arrested 72 suspected drunken drivers in San Diego County over the long Thanksgiving weekend, four less than during the same period last year, the agency announced Tuesday.
The arrests made on local freeways and in unincorporated areas contributed to the 1,028 arrests made by the CHP statewide between 6:01 p.m. Wednesday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday, according to the CHP.
Over the holiday period last year, CHP officers made 76 drunken driving arrests in San Diego County and 982 throughout the state.
Law enforcement officers throughout the county reported three traffic fatalities during this year’s holiday period, and 35 fatalities were reported statewide. Last year, authorities reported 45 fatalities around the state, but none in San Diego County, according to the CHP.
