Deputies in the San Diego County sheriff’s Vista Station have arrested eight known offenders with an eye toward protecting citizens from holiday-related crime, authorities said on Sunday.

The Holiday Watch Operation targeted people on gang probation and “prolific offenders with histories of theft-related crimes,” Sgt. Frank Sandoval said.

“The operation netted eight arrests: five arrests for drug-related charges, one arrest for a probation violation and two arrests involving drug charges and possession of burglary tools,” Sandoval said. This was the ninth year of the Vista Station Holiday Watch.

The announcement came with a warning to citizens about the rise in vehicle burglaries during the holiday shopping season.

“Many people are in a hurry and are concentrating on their shopping and may leave valuables unsecured in their vehicles when at home or on the road inviting the criminal minded to victimize them,” Sandoval said.
