The accident at the general-aviation facility on Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m., according to the county Department of Public Works.
The airport’s fire-suppression unit responded, along with the Carlsbad Fire Department, and extinguished the fire, the county said.
The circumstances of the crash, which prompted a closure of the single-runway airport, were unclear, and the victims’ identities were not immediately available.
Investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were en route to the accident site in the early evening, FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said.
