A Customs and Border Protection Officer has been arrested on suspicion of murder in the shooting death of her boyfriend in Chula Vista.

Chula Vista Police accuse Melissa Hayes-Spencer, 30, of shooting her boyfriend in the chest at around 8:45 a.m Saturday in their apartment complex located in the 1300 block of Santa Rita.

Hayes-Spencer cooperated with police when they arrived. She allegedly claimed that she shot her boyfriend because he attempted to physically abuse her.

Police took her in for questioning and she was later arrested.

The victim’s name was not released, and the shooting remains under investigation.
