A man who was allegedly on drugs opened fire early Monday on a group of drunken people arguing over a possible love triangle outside a home in Chula Vista, authorities said.
Police officers sent to a residence in the 800 block of Monserate Avenue near East Millan Street shortly after 1 a.m. were helping one of the brawlers make arrangements for a ride home when two shots were fired, according to a Chula Vista Police statement. The officers believed they were being targeted.
Others who left the home after the shooting told officers the suspect was armed with a shotgun, was under the influence of a controlled substance and was trying to flee.
Authorities summoned a SWAT team and crisis negotiators, but found the suspect a few blocks away before they arrived. Police said a shotgun likely used in the shooting was found in a backyard of a neighboring home.
The suspected shooter was arrested without incident, according to the police statement. His name was not immediately released.
