Transportation engineer Oscar Vargas, 54, was on his way to home to Chula Vista after working a night shift when he lost control of his work truck for unknown reasons on Interstate 8 in the In-Ko-Pah area about 3:30 a.m., according to the state agency.
The vehicle went down a roadside embankment, ejecting Vargas. He died at the scene.
“This is devastating news,” Caltrans District 11 Director Laurie Berman said. “Oscar Vargas was a well-liked co-worker and friend to many employees in the department.”
Gov. Jerry Brown said he was “saddened to learn of the death of Oscar Vargas, who worked day in and day out to make the roads safer for Californians.”
Vargas, a 29-year Caltrans employee, is survived by his wife, Marie, and two adult children, Oskar and Christian. Flags at the state Capitol will be lowered to half-staff in his honor.
