Naval Medical Center San Diego in Balboa Park was under a brief lockdown Friday evening because of reports of armed robbery suspect in the area.

The lockdown was in place at around 4:30 p.m. and was lifted at around 5:25 p.m.

“NMCSD has secured from the shelter in place. All gates are re-opening and operations are returning to normal,” a message on the medical center’s FaceBook read.

Officers fanned out through the area about 4 p.m. in search of 22-year- old Russell Merck, who is the subject of a felony arrest warrant, according to police.

As a precaution, the military hospital off Florida and Pershing Drives directed its staff and patients to “shelter in place” in secured buildings until further notice.

During the chase, an officer suffered some sort of apparently minor injury, police said. Medics took him to an emergency room for an evaluation.

As of shortly after 5 p.m., police were breaking up the perimeter they had formed around a section of the park where they believed Merck had fled, Officer Robert Helms said.

Officers were directed to remain on the lookout for the suspect, Helms said.
