A man was killed as he lost control of his vehicle in the mountains between Alpine and El Cajon Sunday.

The man was identified as a 23-year-old from El Cajon, but his name was not immediately released.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash was at 3:36 a.m  on Harbison Canyon Road, south of Old U.S. 80. The driver was heading south when he hit a fire hydrant and a tree on the west side of the road.

The small car rolled onto its roof, and the man was dead at the scene, the CHP said. The San Diego County Medical Examiner was called to investigate.
