A 33-year-old man was shot and killed by a deputy in the Japatul Valley area Wednesday.
The shooting occurred in the 3600 block of Emmanual Way late Wednesday afternoon, San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Lt. John Maryon said.
Deputies responded to a call of a violent, mentally ill man at a residence around 4:25 p.m., and were told the man had said he intended to attack a deputy with a screwdriver, with the intent of provoking a shooting, Maryon said.
As this information was being broadcast, a deputy confronted the man near the residence, Maryon said.
The deputy deployed his Taser before firing at the man, who died at the scene, Maryon said.
A screwdriver was found next to the man’s body, Maryon said.
The deputy was not injured, Maryon said.
