A man hospitalized following a deadly wrong-way collision on State Route 163 in Mission Valley over the weekend is expected to face two counts of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and five charges of felony DUI causing injury, authorities said Monday.
Jason Riley King, 21, was heading south on the northbound side of the freeway just north of Interstate 8 shortly after 1:30 a.m. Saturday when his 2000 Ford F350 hit an oncoming 2014 Toyota Prius carrying five people, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The head-on crash fatally injured the other driver, 23-year-old Madison Cornwell of Mission Viejo, and one of her passengers, 24-year-old La Jolla resident Anne Li Baldock, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office. Medics pronounced them dead at the scene of the accident.
Three men in the Prius ranging in age from their mid-20s to early 30s suffered moderately serious to severe trauma in the collision.
King also was left with extensive injuries. Due to his condition, he likely will be arraigned at UCSD Medical Center sometime over the next several days, CHP public-affairs Officer Jake Sanchez said.
