A man who died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after allegedly killing his 25-year-old girlfriend at their San Luis Rey- area condominium was publicly identified Tuesday.
Jose Beltran, 25, was placed on life support following the shooting inside the residence at 4215 Vista del Rio Way Wednesday, and died the following afternoon, according to Oceanside Police and the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office. Kirsten Jelinski died at the scene.
Someone who knew the couple entered the condo after hearing the gunshots, saw blood seeping out from underneath an interior doorway and called for help, Oceanside police Lt. Leonard Cosby said.
Beltran and Jelinski were found on the floor of their master bedroom with gunshot wounds to their heads, authorities said. A pistol lay nearby.
Cosby said preliminary evidence suggested that Beltran shot Jelinski and then shot himself, though detectives were not absolutely ruling out the possibility that an unidentified third person could have been responsible.
Police said there was no immediate indication of a motive for the crime, but U-T San Diego reported Beltran had lost his job and the couple had recently split up.
