A bat- and knife-wielding man allegedly on drugs punched the manager of an El Cajon motel early Sunday then holed up inside, smashing numerous objects until he was zapped with a stun gun and arrested.
The suspect, later identified by police as Darnell Whitaker, 28, was initially spotted breaking windows at the Villa Serena Motel on El Cajon Boulevard near West Washington Avenue shortly after 5 a.m., El Cajon police Lt. Walt Miller said.
The motel’s manager told officers Whitaker knocked on the lobby door and punched him in the face once he answered, according to the lieutenant. However, the manager and his wife were able to run out into the parking lot.
Miller said Whitaker then locked himself in the lobby, broke several objects and injured himself in the process.
Police eventually coaxed Whitaker out, but he refused to follow further orders. Officers were unsure if he was still armed and used the electronic stun gun to subdue him, Miller said.
Whitaker was placed under arrest and was taken to a hospital to be treated for the injuries he sustained while vandalizing the motel.
Once he was cleared, he would be jailed on suspicion of burglary, vandalism, committing a felony while on bail and being under the influence of drugs, Miller said.
