Authorities searched for a motorist who refused to pull over for a traffic stop in Mountain View on Monday and managed to elude officers during a vehicle chase that lasted about 15 minutes.
The pursuit began shortly before 4 p.m. on southbound Interstate 805, near Imperial Avenue, according to San Diego police.
The fleeing driver soon exited the freeway and drove on surface streets while apparently talking on a cell phone.
After a few minutes, the man drove back onto the I-805, this time heading north, SDPD spokesman Humberto Hernandez said. At that point a police lieutenant called off the ground units for safety reasons and directed an airborne crew to continue tailing the motorist.
The air crew, however, soon lost sight of the fleeing man’s green Lexus.
Officers planned to keep an eye out for the vehicle while on patrol in center-city districts through the afternoon and evening.
It was unclear why an officer tried to pull the motorist over in the first place.
