A man suspected of attempting to break into a discarded cash register near a Mission Village electronics store early Tuesday led police officers on a chase into Serra Mesa, where he crashed a van into a fire hydrant.
Someone spotted the suspect around 1:20 a.m. as he was trying to open the register that had been left near a dumpster for the Fry’s store on Stonecrest Boulevard near Murphy Canyon Road, said San Diego police Officer Humberto Hernandez.
The suspect drove off in a white cargo van and headed south on Interstate 15, then led officers onto Interstates 8 and 805 before exiting on Murray Ridge Road, Hernandez said.
He crashed the van into a fire hydrant on nearby Onalaska Avenue and ran off, according to the officer, who said a knife and one of the suspect’s shoes were later found in the same area.
The suspect attempted to hide between houses, but was found and arrested shortly after 3 a.m., Hernandez said. His name was not immediately available.
