A 48-year-old man allegedly broke into an occupied San Marcos home and forced the resident to give up his vehicle, but was arrested as he was attempting to get it started.
The suspect was identified as Jeffrey Carl Michaels.
He knocked on the front door of the home in the 700 block of Avenida Leon near Las Posas Road around 11:30 a.m. Friday, sheriff’s Sgt. Tom Vrabel said.
The resident refused to answer his door because he did not recognize the unexpected visitor, but later found Michaels rummaging through his cabinets and drawers, Vrabel said. He had entered the home through an apparently unlocked sliding glass door.
Michaels allegedly demanded the keys to the resident’s vehicle, which was parked in the driveway. Vrabel said the victim called 911 as Michaels was attempting to leave.
An arriving deputy found Michaels as he was trying to start the victim’s vehicle and detained him until additional deputies arrived and arrested him, Vrabel said.
