One person suffered minor injuries, six apartment units were damaged and 15 residents were forced from their homes in a midnight hour fire Saturday at an Oceanside apartment complex.
The fire was reported at 12:10 a.m. Saturday at the complex at 147 Canyon Drive, and Oceanside Fire Department crews arrived on scene at 12:16 a.m., Battalion Chief Felipe Rodriguez said. Crews in 10 engines and two trucks helped fight the blaze.
One resident suffered burns to the arms while trying to extinguish the fire and was treated and released from the hospital, Rodriguez said. No other injuries were reported and all residents exited the building safely, and firefighters saved one cat from one of the units.
Crews responding to the call found heavy fire in one of the upstairs units of the eight-unit complex and requested assistance, the battalion chief said.
“A second alarm was immediately requested due to the amount of fire present, the size of the building and the potential for residents within the apartment during the middle of the night,” Rodriguez said.
Crews from Carlsbad, Vista and Camp Pendleton helped Oceanside firefighters at the blaze. Firefighters stretched hose line to the second floor unit to attack the fire with water from the interior while others made a “trench cut” in the roof to prevent the fire from spreading to the attic area, Rodriguez said.
Other crews searched for residents and supported the attack crew with additional hose lines.
Two upstairs units were damaged by the fire, two downstairs units sustained water damage and two adjoining units sustained smoke and water damage, Rodriguez said. The American Red Cross responded to help 15 residents who were displaced.
Damage was estimated at $300,000, and investigators had not found the cause of the fire.
