A motorist in a silver Jaguar sped away from a traffic stop on Interstate 8 today and led officers on a chase from Mission Valley to Ocean Beach and back again before pulling into an underground parking garage and escaping on foot.
The pursuit began when a motorcycle officer tried to pull over the driver for speeding near College Avenue shortly before 9:30 a.m., according to San Diego police.
He soon left the interstate and continued fleeing on surface streets briefly, then pulled into a parkade at a shopping center in the 7500 block of Hazard Center Drive, SDPD public-affairs Officer Mark Herring said.
By the time officers found the car, the driver, later identified as Joseph Luis Gonzales, 54, was gone. They searched the area but were unable to locate him, Herring said.
Officials initially misidentified him as Jose Luis Gonzales.
