A man who threatened to kill himself held police at bay outside a City Heights residence for more than eight hours before being taken into custody Friday, authorities said.

The man, who was armed with a knife, had been holed up alone in the 3800 block of Estrella Avenue near University Avenue since about 8:45 p.m. Thursday, according to San Diego Police.

The suspect was taken into custody with the help of a police dog shortly after 5:30 a.m., San Diego police Officer Frank Cali said.

Cali said the suspect would be taken to a hospital, but it was unknown if he was injured.
