An investigation was under way Wednesday in Scripps Ranch, where a 52-year-old woman trying to break up a fight over a cell phone was struck in the head and critically injured by a tree branch swung by an acquaintance, police said.
The assault in the 10500 block of Canyon Lake Drive was reported about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros.
The fight was over a stolen cell phone, he said, adding it took place near a homeless encampment.
The woman was taken to a hospital to be treated for a life-threatening head injury, Delimitros said.
The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived.
