A man who allegedly robbed a Clairemont Mesa bank Monday afternoon holed up inside along with some employees when a patrol officer confronted him, resulting in a 40-minute standoff that ended with his surrender.
The holdup at the Chase bank branch office in the 5800 block of Balboa Avenue was reported about 1:15 p.m., according to San Diego police.
Roughly five minutes later, an officer tried to arrest the suspect, prompting him to flee back inside the bank, SDPD public-affairs Officer Matt Tortorella said. Several workers were inside the bank at the time.
A SWAT team was en route when the suspect, who was believed to be armed with a pistol, gave himself up and was arrested. The special weapons and tactics personnel were then called off.
No injuries were reported.
The suspect’s name was not immediately available.
