Authorities have named a 21-year-old woman killed in a single-vehicle East County freeway crash that also injured a man and a baby.

Lindsey Woods of Alpine was driving a Jeep Cherokee west on Interstate 8 in Alpine at high speed when she swerved to avoid slowing traffic ahead of her and lost control shortly before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office and California Highway Patrol.

The vehicle careened off the edge of the freeway near Tavern Road and tumbled down an embankment, CHP public affairs Officer Kevin Pearlstein said.

Woods died at the scene.

Medics took a 21-year-old man and 1-year-old boy riding in the Jeep to hospitals for treatment of serious and minor injuries, respectively, Pearlstein said.
