About a half-dozen gunshots rang out at the intersection of 41st Street and Orange Avenue shortly after 6 a.m., according to San Diego police.

Patrol officers found the mortally wounded man inside his bullet-riddled SUV. Medics took him to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from gunshot wounds to his upper body, homicide Lt. Mike Hastings said. The victim’s name was withheld pending family notification.

At least one witness told detectives the shooter, a dark-skinned man in jeans and a sweat shirt, opened fire while on a bicycle and then rode away.

No suspects were in custody as of midday, the lieutenant said.
