San Diego Gas & Electric was honored with the electric power industry’s inaugural Community Safety Award for the utility’s efforts to ensure safety during wildfires.

Since the disastrous 2007 fires in San Diego County, SDG&E has pioneered technologies and programs to monitor and forecast weather and fire conditions and also invested in hardening the power grid against wildfires.

The company was also recognized for the 14th consecutive year as being the most reliable electric utility in the western United States.

The annual ReliabilityOne awards were given by PA Consulting, a London-based international consulting firm that specializes in projects for the electrical power industry. This year’s awards were announced Thursday at a reception in Austin, TX

“Our 4,200 employees take a tremendous amount of pride in delivering best-in-class service to the customers and communities that we are privileged to serve,” said Caroline Winn, SDG&E’s chief operating officer.” Our company culture is centered around continuous improvement, so we are always exploring new technologies and programs to enhance the safety and reliability of our power grid operations.”

Gregg Edeson, director of PA Consulting’s awards program, described SDG&E as “an industry leader for delivering stellar service and restoration efforts while balancing customer needs and optimizing investments.”
