Cross Border Xpress, the bridge from Otay Mesa to the Tijuana International Airport, saw a 33 percent increase in travelers in the first five months of 2019.

A total of 1.11 million passengers used the bi-national bridge during the period, compared to 841,000 during the same months in 2018.

A somewhat greater number came from Mexico –627,000 — that went to Mexico — 488,000.

The 390-foot-long pedestrian bridge opened in 2015 and has seen steady growth, leading to expanded parking options.

A single ticket to cross in one direction is $16, with discounts for round-trips and family groups.

The growth in traffic across the bridge comes as a new forecast by the San Diego County Airport Authority shows passenger traffic at San Diego International Airport reaching a maximum as soon as 2035 because of the limitations of a single runway.
