San Diego-based Sempra Energy Monday announced that George W. Bilicic will become group president in charge of the company’s strategy, corporate development and legal activities.

Bilicic, 55, currently serves as vice chairman of investment banking and global head of power, energy and infrastructure at Lazard Ltd., a New York-based investment banking firm. He will join Sempra in his new role later this year.

Before joining Lazard, Bilicic served as managing director and head of infrastructure at KKR, a global investment firm.

Bilicic also has previous experience as managing director at Merrill Lynch in its mergers and acquisitions department and was a partner in the law firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore.

“George Bilicic is a well-respected advisor and leader in our industry and I could not be more pleased that he is joining the Sempra team,” Sempra Chairman and CEO Jeffrey W. Martin said in a statement. “He is an outstanding strategist, with a background in the law and especially deep experience in the capital markets.”

Bilicic holds a bachelor’s degree from DeSales University in Pennsylvania and a law degree from Georgetown University, where he currently serves on the Law Center Board of Visitors.

He is also a member of the board of directors of Polaris Industries and The HistoryMakers as well as the board of trustees of the Mayo Clinic and the Museum of Science and Industry.
