KNSD-TV/NBC 7 San Diego reporter Steven Luke is currently in his first of three weeks in South Korea to report on the XXIII Olympic Winter Games from PeyongChang.

Luke will provide live reports airing on morning and evening newscasts, along with social media starting this week. The opening ceremony broadcast, hosted by Mike Tirico and Katie Couric, will be held Thursday, Feb. 8.

Luke has been reporting on local Olympic connections and storylines for NBC 7 since 2003, including trips to Torino in 2006, London in 2012, Sochi in Russia in 2014 and Rio de Janeiro in 2016. He has worked at the station since August 2002. Luke also interned at the station while attending San Diego State University.

NBC Universal says its coverage will be the most live Winter Olympics ever. Televised events will be spread over NBC, NBCSN (NBC Sports Network), NBCOlympics.com, MSNBC, CNBC, Golf Channel, Bravo and the USA Network, as well as Telemundo and NBC Universo, both Spanish-language channels.

With the benefit of a 14-hour time difference, NBC and NBCSN will present live competition in primetime on every night of the Olympics, excluding the opening and closing ceremonies. Opening ceremonies can be seen live with the event’s natural sound without commentators beginning at 3 a.m. Pacific time on Friday, Feb. 9, on NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app.

NBC has placed Southern California teenager Chloe Kim, a first-generation Korean American, at the forefront of its promotional spots. The 17-year-old from La Palma is expected to medal in the snowboarding competition.

KBTZ-FM No Longer 94/9—Now ALT 949

Entercom Communications, operator of five radio stations in San Diego, has changed the name of KBZT 94.9-FM, its alternative-rock station, from FM 94/9 to ALT 949. The name-change was effective Feb. 1. The station had been known as FM 94/9 since 2002 (previously, the station played hits from the 1980s).

“KBZT continues to define the alternative rock format and the new ALT 949 name solidifies its place as the alternative music leader in our market,” said Bob Bolinger, Entercom senior VP and market manager.

Chris Patyk said his recent new appointment as KBZT program director played a role in the name change. “Many elements were already in play before I took over and others were expedited as soon as I took the reins,” Patyk said.

Last year, KBZT became the flagship station for San Diego Padres’ baseball game day broadcasts. It was the first time since Petco Park opened in 2004 for games to be heard on a FM music station rather than an all-sports AM station.

Also introduced last week, Entercom changed the weekday programming lineup at two of its other stations. DJs on KYXY 96.5-FM now include: Susan DeVincent, mornings; Dorothy Tran, midday; Joe Rosati, afternoon drive; Sherry Knight, nights. DJs on KXSN Sunny 98.1-FM now include: A.J. Machado and Sara Perry, mornings; Dave Mason, midday; Gene Knight, afternoon drive; Brooks O’Brian, nights. “These changes are part of our commitment to giving our fans the top-of-the-line listening experience they expect from us,” said Bolinger.

Entercom Communications’ five local stations include KBZT, KYXY, KXSN, KSON 103.7-FM and KEGY Energy 97.3-FM.

SDSU Journalism School Launches Lecture Series

San Diego State University’s School of Journalism and Media Studies will launch the Allen H. Center Distinguished Lecture Series featuring a speech from Dr. Glen Broom, SDSU professor emeritus, at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 5, in the Charles Hostler Lecture Hall in the university’s Storm Hall.

The public is invited to attend the free event. Parking is free in structure no. 12. Broom’s lecture, to include comments on the First Amendment and the current state of journalism, public relations, economics and politics, is titled “Climate Change for the Fourth Estate.” To RSVP online, visit centerlecturebroom.eventbrite.com.

Broom taught at SDSU for 28 years while creating one of the top 10 public relations programs in the country. He served as chair of the SDSU Department of Journalism from 1989 to 1995. He retired in 2008 after publishing more than 50 scholarly articles and papers and mentoring more than 3,000 public relations students.

In 2013, SDSU established ​in his honor​ a professional center for public relations. The Glen M. Broom Center for Professional Development in Public Relations ​supports an internship program for public relations students, including student advising and career development, provide​s​ training programs for working professionals and supports research activities for faculty and graduate students.

The lecture series is named after the late Allen Center, co-author of “Effective Public Relations,” considered the definitive PR textbook in academia (Broom co-authored the last six editions of the textbook). Center was a distinguished lecturer at SDSU following his retirement as VP of PR from Motorola. He passed away at age 93 in 2005 at his Rancho Bernardo home.

IABC San Diego Presents Scripps Health CEO on Leadership

The International Association of Business Communicators San Diego chapter will host “Effecting Change Through Front-line Leadership,” a program featuring Chris Van Gorder, CEO of Scripps Health, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9, at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine.

Cost to attend is $30 for members and $40 for nonmembers. Admission includes parking. Proceeds will benefit the Scripps Health Foundation. Officials said the event will starts promptly at 4 p.m. To RSVP, visit sandiego.iabc.com.

Van Gorder, author of “The Front-Line Leader: Building a High Performance Organization from the Ground Up,” has served as Scripps’ CEO for 18 years.
